Historical/Primary (Many are also public domain and can be found for free online)
The Poetic Edda, or Elder Edda (B) (I) (I have the Hollander translation, but the Larrington and Bellows translations have been well reviewed also)
The Prose Edda, or Younger Edda by Snorri Sturluson (B) (I) (A bit more of the blatant Christian influence, but a good read when you weed that out and understand Snorri’s reasoning behind it)
Scandinavian folk/fairytales (B) (I) (Though many were composed post-conversion, they will sometimes carry elements of pre-Christian beliefs and mythology within them. Many compilations exist, sometimes by specific country.)
The Road to Hel: A Study of the Conception of the Dead in Old Norse Literature by Hilda Roderick Ellis (free PDF can be found with a Google search) (I)
Arild-Hauges Runer (B) (I) (The site is in Norwegian, but can be translated to English via the button at the top of the page. It’s more limited in English, but still very good)
Don’t Bother:
Norse Magic by D.J Conway (It’s basically a rehash of her Celtic Magic Book with a Norse veneer. Celtic Magic in turn was basically Wicca with a Celtic veneer.)
Anything by $ilver Ravenwolf (One could expand that to include topics beyond these)
The Rites of Odin by Ed Fitch (Similar to Norse Magic, this is basically taking Wiccan practices and applying a Norse veneer. It contains mead and drinking horn making instructions which may be of interest, but the rest is worth passing on.)
Pretty much anything else published by Llewellyn
The Book of Runes by Ralph Blum (I cannot say this enough)
Books by Stephen Flowers (aka Edred Thorsson) (His writing is full of influences from ceremonial magic traditions and other inauthentic inventions, and he fails to warn the reader when these are present. His books have some good information in them, but for the amount of misinformation there are much better books to read.)
And the weak shall fear the Thu’um, and flee in terror.
DISMAY: A CURSE
Things you’ll need
Your voice
A representation of the target (a photo or poppet)
Something the target is afraid of; this could be a photo or drawing, or if you don’t know anything the target is afraid of specifically, you could conjure up feelings of paranoia to send in their direction
A jar or box
If you are picking an alternative object of terror (paranoia or something that is generally thought of as “scary”) it is very important that you do NOT think of something that you personally are afraid of. You don’t want to accidentally target yourself!
Focus on the target, and imagine them encountering the object of their fear. Imagine them filling to the brim with fear. They see their fear around every corner, in every dark shadow. Spiders come up from the sink drain, or bees fly in from every open window. When your image of the target is filled with their terror and paranoia, Shout the Words with as much force as you can muster. Place the target’s representation and the object of their fear in the box or jar, and seal it. Place it in a safe, dark place.
When you feel like your curse has run its course, dispose of the box or jar.
Asexuals are valid and should be included in queer spaces and that’s them facts.
I hope all the asexuals have a lovely Thursday, aka Thor’s Day, Thor the thunder god and protector of humanity. Thor loves everybody and knows you’re valid.
What you need:
Lemon (to bring problems to their lives)
Nails (to bring pain)
Twine black ( for banishing)
Dragons blood ink ( for magical potency) {or regular ink if you don’t have any }
Knife
Scissors
Step one : write the name / names of the people you want to curse. As you write the names concentrate on how they will no longer hurt you.
Step two: cut the names into pieces so that they will fit into the lemon.
Step three: cut the lemon into slices that correspond with the number of people getting cursed.
Step four: place the names between the slices, then hold them closed together with the nails and twine, focusing on how they will have pain and sorrow. Now they are bound to the curse and can no longer hurt you.
Step five: you can dispose of the cursed lemon any way you see fit so that they are out of your life.
1) Imagine the target while making four cast ons, building negative energy as you work. (I use four because of the association with death in various cultures, but if you have a particular negative association with a different number feel free to use that instead)
2) As you start knitting stitches imaging tangling up the recipient of the curse in restraints. If you are doing a tighter knit, perhaps the restraints are cutting their spiritual self. Continue knitting these stitches until you have a length large enough to give to the person as a gift (ex. hair tie, bracelet, choker, scarf) or until you have ran out of rage/yarn (whichever comes first)
3) As you cast off say the following:
As I cast off this hatred, may you be strangled by this red rope.
As I have binded you, may your endeavors fail.
As these ties are done may these numbers triumph in bringing you pain
May these work be done on to you, and may my energy not return to cause me harm.
4) Give the gift to your victim if possible, if not place it in a container with their picture.
This curse was created to bind someone with their own greed, need for power, and the wrong that they have done, and make them realize what they have become, based off of how the One Ring corrupted the bearer of the ring (though this will only affect the person this curse is aimed at).
Supplies:
Yarn or String (at least a few inches long)
Scissors and/or fire (To break the curse)
Steps:
Begin by taking a length of yarn or string, and visualize the end of it tying onto the target’s finger.
Loop the yarn, and tie it together into a circle. Make the knot as tight as you can.
Continue by wrapping the extra yarn around the “ring”, and as you go, chant “One Ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them”.
Once you come to the end of the yarn, knot it on the ring, and visualize it trapping all of the greed/any bad that the target has done to them.
Put the “ring” somewhere it will not be disturbed.
To break the curse: Cut into the ring with scissors, making sure to cut the knots, and toss it into a fire (the fire is optional, and please use proper fire safety)
