I bring you the first in my constellations tarot series: Andromeda! The cards in this spread are arranged like the stars in the constellation. It is a spread for when you have become a bargaining chip in a broader conflict.

  1. The Rock: What is the underlying conflict at play?
  2. The Damsel: How are others using you in this conflict? How are you being treated?
  3. The 1st Chain: What societal role are you expected to play in this situation?
  4. The 2nd Chain: What personal obligations do you feel towards the conflicting parties?
  5. The Monster: What is the outcome if this conflict continues to escalate?
  6. The Hero: What is one way to change the course of or solve the conflict?
  7. The Wave: What is a second way to change the course of or solve the conflict?

I based this spread pretty heavily on the situation Andromeda faces in the Greek myth about her. It may help you understand the spread if you are familiar with the myth as well. Many of the other spreads in this series won’t be quite so symbolic, but this is one of my favorite stories so I had to do it justice.

Crowley is a piece of antisemitic trash.

Also there is a lot of evidence in his writing of actually being a misogynist and abuser.

I could rant for like 100 years about Crowley but yeah. While I won’t discount that he had some useful/good ideas/philosophies (mostly appropriated from other cultures oop), he was unquestionably anti-Semitic, racist, misogynistic, had a LOT of internalized heterosexism he lashed out on, and he used his practices and beliefs to abuse/manipulate others and coerce participation in his sexual fetishes as a path to “magickal enlightenment”. He was also one of those assholes who liked being seen as powerfully malevolent/666/The Beast whatever lol, and therefore used that as an excuse to treat people like shit, which is pretty pathetic.

@fantasy-loving-witchling The book Aleister Crowley: Magick, Rock and Roll, and the Wickedest Man in the World by Gary Lachman would be a good place to start. It’s critical of Crowley without overdramatizing him as evil incarnate, it’s well-sourced, and it shows an appreciation for some of his occult practices while still calling him out as an asshole.

@flower-in-the-ashes I was never involved in Thelema and know more about it as practices by Crowley than as practiced by others, so I can’t say for sure. Forgive me, Thelemites, if anything I say below is wrong:

I’m guessing modern Thelema is a mixed bag like most other neopagan stuff. I know for a fact some of it misappropriates Kabbalistic stuff from Jewish sources, as well as some things Crowley scooped up from Hinduism and Buddhism, so there’s that to look out for. I know Kemeticism is open but it’s also possible some of the more Egyptian-centric Thelema practices are done in a racist way too, knowing Crowley. But Thelema does seem pretty broad and open-ended. Sarah Anne Lawless is the only semi-well-known living practioner of Thelema I’m personally aware of, and she seems fine in my cursory understanding. Certainly in general ceremonial/hierarchical structures can be extra risky for potential abuse of power, so if I were to join one of those I’d be extra cautious, but this doesn’t necessarily describe all of Thelema either. So… I’m not sure. 🤔
