I know we all have our own practices but I get really, really annoyed with Wiccans and their superiority complex. Like I get it as a former Wiccan, but please don’t pull this bullshit of “anyone can throw magick around like a toy but one who truly trusts their craft, treats their magick like a sacred gift” in relation to curses/hexes. That’s great and all for you but the world doesn’t work in black and white and cursing someone who is physically or emotionally hurting you (read abusers) isn’t a bad thing nor is it throwing magic around as if it’s nothing. There’s a lot of energy that goes into cursing and making sure it doesn’t affect the innocent. This really shouldn’t have to be said over and over.
tl;dr: You aren’t superior to cursing witches just because you think cursing is 100% bad. Please stop acting self-righteous about it.
Fucking. This.
This is an issue in the wiccan faith. I would like to mention though, I have a pet peave about generalized call outs. Yes I know that you don’t mean all wiccans, but you should put ‘some wiccans’. It only bothers me because new Witchlings have a tendency to take these things at face value. And they don’t want to be part of something elitist so they don’t look in to wicca at all.
There are quite a few wiccans out there that do have a superiority complex, even whole wiccan paths are like that. But there are so many paths in Wicca. My wiccan path is ok with curses if they are for a purpose. It’s not considered harming if they deserve it. Or if it’s to protect someone from them. There are self righteous, black and white wiccan paths, but there are also adaptable, life is gray wiccan paths.
We shouldn’t use generalities when talking about people. A handful of anyone can’t portray the thoughts and feelings and ideas of an entire population of people.
Thx for reading
I am aware that not all Wiccans are like this. The issue is is that Wicca as an institution has a problem with this. It is prevalent. In Heathenry we have a racist problem. I know not all of us are racist fuckwads but I cannot in good conscious distance myself from that fact which is why I speak out against the ones we have a problem with. As am institution Heathenry can be kinda shitty. My point is is that if you see a problem, speak out.
When I first started out in Paganism I was Wiccan. There are many reasons why I left it but one of them was most of the Wiccans I interested with irl and on this site acted as if critical thinking was a bad thing. I didn’t leave Christianity to blindly follow another religion and not question it’s cultural appropriation tendencies. If a new Wiccan can’t critically think about anything then that is on you guys. If you want them to know cursing isn’t 100%, talk to them. It isn’t on the rest of us who get dragged through the mud because many of you have a black and white morality that you as an institution seem, from my experiences, to push on others in a holier than thou manner.
I’m super sick of the “not all X!” deflective tactic people use to avoid accountability/responsibility for a problem in their community, such as (example given) a white people responding to POC’s experiences of/with racism with “not all white people!” instead just working to solve the damaging ideology and behavior in the first place. Turning a blind eye to your problems doesn’t make them go away, they just fester and build up and hurt more people in the process. It’s not helpful for anyone to go “Well I’m not like those ones/Not all X!”—which isn’t the bloody point—and is in fact a terrible cop out. Everyone suffers and the community in question becomes a toxic cesspool of unaddressed issues that can’t stand up to scrutiny. You are just as complicit for perpetuating problems by ignoring them as the people who actively perpetrate. If you really don’t want to be lumped in as part of the problem, do something to fix it instead of sitting on your hands and screaming that it’s only those people.
