Plant Spirits

witchhavencommunity:

There are a great many people who believe that non-human creatures have souls or spirits. For some of us, this applies to our plant friends, as well. In my own belief system, it only makes sense that they would. I believe that each living creature creates energy by living (the energy we often identify as an aura is the visual imprint of this).

Of course, there is plentiful folklore about plant spirits throughout various cultures. Western beliefs, like those related to the fae such as the Spriggan, often promote ideas about plant spirits. The Greeks believed in Dryads, which are the spirits of oak trees. Examples abound throughout mythology and folklore.

In the modern day, people who refer to themselves as nature worshippers are good examples of a large group of people who usually believe in plant spirits. Many green witches, spirit workers, energy workers, or more general pagans believe in and work with the spirits of plants.

This can simply mean that when they’re out and about, they stop to “chat” with a plant by getting a sense of their energy. It can also mean that they grow plants themselves or care for those in their local area. By identifying and finding a way to communicate with these spirits, some folks find that they’re in the ideal position to help them.

Though being able to identify (or even believing in) the spirit of a plant is not required to be a green witch, it appears to be pretty common. I’ve seen countless green witches who refer to the plants they work with as though they were dear friends or children in their care. Usually, the person gives the plants they work with names, at least in my experience, because plants don’t
tend to tell us one.

If you’re interested in learning to get a sense of plant spirits, I usually suggest that you either (or both!) try to grow a plant yourself or spend time in a specific area where foliage abounds. If you decide to grow a plant, I recommend a potted mint plant. Mint tends to be “loud” and “chattery” which makes it easy to get a sense of. I do want to emphasize that you should grow it in a pot, though, because it will become invasive if you’re not careful!

Best of luck!

My kindred always makes good points when I’m gone XD This is an attitude I’ve noticed in some Asatruar and Heathens as well and it’s frustrating. Most of the Gods of not all are Jotnar themselves or Jotnar kin. Yeah perhaps not all etins like humans or want to work with us, but that doesn’t make them evil.

Angrboda, for example, isn’t evil but sure as hell doesn’t give a fuck about our little squabbles. She’s gory more important things to worry about. Doesn’t mean She ignores those of us She’s called to Her. She’s incredibly loyal to those She considers Her own.

If ya’ll would knock it off with your holier than thou crap you might just see how our relationships with the Jotnar is a lot more complicated than forced black and white morality.

I’m only reading Feeding the Flame to edit it since both my kindred and I want to write devotional books for our Gods and to combat the shit that comes out of Krasskova but this story makes me livid.

It turns Loki into a sexual predator and infantalizes Sigyn and Her autonomy. I’ve written more about this story before here but I can’t get over the passive and active pedophilia. No one in my kindred believes this story and it honestly needs to just be set on fire. I’ll put the roughly six instances of pedophilia under the cut with a warning.

The other issue is how on pages 94 and 95 Krasskova discusses some bullshit about the Aesir not liking Jotun ancestry. (Click image below to enlarge it.  Sorry, guys.)

Hon, literally all the Aesir are Jotun in some way. Thor is the son of Odin and Jord who is a Jotun. Skadhi is a Jotun. Ya know what, let’s go down the list of Jotnar among the Aesir shall we:

  • Odin – descended from Jotnar
  • Skadhi
  • Gerd
  • Thor – son of Jord who is a Jotun
  • Loki
  • Aegir
  • Rind
  • Ran
  • Hel
  • Nott
  • Dagr
  • Magni – son of Thor and Jarnsaxa who is a Jotun
  • Modi – son of Thor and Sif
  • Thrud – daughter of Thor and Sif
  • Narfi – son of Sigyn and Loki
  • Vali – son of Sigyn and Loki
  • Vali – son of Odin and Rind

The point is that there are a fucking lot because that’s all I can think of at the moment and someone correct me if I’ve gotten one wrong.  Also the only reason why I didn’t add Sigyn is because we don’t know who Her parents were and there are theories that She might be a daughter of Odin because of Her name meaning “victory” or “victorious girl-friend.”

This whole anti-Jotnar thing is only partially toward certain Jotuns in the lore but mostly toward Jotnar by fuckwads who think the Aesir are the supreme Gods who can do no wrong. Boy do I have a newsflash for y’all because Odin has done some pretty shitty things too.  As for Krasskova, those lines just don’t make sense with the lore nor anyone else’s interactions with the Gods that I’ve ever met or read.

Anyway, if Krasskova could stop being a piece of shit for just one minute that would be awesome.

TW for pedophilia below the cut (also sorry for my terrible handwriting)
